147 LARA-licensed settings in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties list Alzheimer's as a population they are licensed to serve: 69 in Oakland County, 38 in Wayne County and 40 in Macomb County. 103 are Homes for the Aged and 44 are larger Adult Foster Care homes, together licensed for 9,975 residents.

The Alzheimer's flag means LARA approved the home to admit residents with dementia; it does not tell you whether there is a secured unit or how staff are trained. What is the difference between assisted living and memory care in Michigan?

Michigan has no license called "assisted living" or "memory care." Both are delivered in a Home for the Aged (21 or more residents age 55 and up) or an Adult Foster Care home licensed by LARA; memory care is that same license with Alzheimer's listed as a population served, usually in a secured unit with dementia-trained staff.

The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), Bureau of Community and Health Systems, licenses Homes for the Aged under Part 213 of the Public Health Code and Adult Foster Care homes under the Adult Foster Care Facility Licensing Act (1979 PA 218). Nursing homes are licensed separately under Part 217.
